Direct-Hire Authority

Direct Hire Authority has been granted government-wide for Veterinary Medical Officer positions due to a severe shortage of candidates. This authority permits hiring without regard to certain competitive requirements. Candidates under this announcement are not rated or ranked and individuals are not awarded preference for their status as a veteran. Applicants are still strongly encouraged to provide complete information about their job-related experience and education, as well as provide documentation related to veteran's preference. The Veterinary Medical Officer position is also referred to as Public Health Veterinarian (PHV).

FSIS has a variety of incentives that are of interest to those considering a career as an in-plant Public Health Veterinarian. For information, click:

PHV Incentives

  • FSIS offers a four-year recruitment incentive of $5,000 per year for a period of four years for a total of $20,000 (less taxes) for each newly hired in-plant PHV with a full performance level of GS-12.
    • Former employees with at least a 90-day break in service may also be eligible.
